CLD Newsletter
Welcome to the Whananaki (CLD) newsletter – February 2022 issue.
Our February Community Champion
This month we feature Kim O’Conner for her contribution to community development. Thank you, Kim for the difference you are making in Whananaki, going above and beyond with the Taiao initiative, supporting weed eradication, seed propagation and indigenous biodiversity.
Nga mihi kia koe, mo to mahi
CLD Coordinator
The CLD Leadership Group are pleased to announce that Tineka Waetford has joined the Coordination Team. Tineka is no stranger to community initiatives in Whananaki as she was previously on the CLD leadership group as a youth trustee. Tineka is excited to be taking on this new part time role to support community led development. The recent bombing activity off the footbridge organised by Tineka was well received by the many enthusiasts who joined in.
Community Food Forest and Native Nursery
The earth works and building of the nursery is well underway. Check out the progress to date! Ngâ mihi to Pera Waetford who is leading the building works with hands on support from the Taiao team, Jason Moore, Charles and Titan Waetford and site project support from Allan Moore.
The overall design plan is managed by Dennis who is an award-winning expert who has many years of experience in native restoration projects. Alongside Dennis Scott we are pleased to have oversight from horticultural experts Jamie Hancox and Tania Niha. Once the nursery is up we plan to have an open day, so watch this space.
Contemporary Pou Initiative
Completing a Pou prototype has been a dream for the last few years and finally, we can see this coming to fruition.
Ngā mihi to all those who have been involved especially the champions – Anthony and Shaun Walters and the kaumātua roopu who have provided advice along the way.
Thanks to Taki Palmer and Pera Waetford for assisting with the installation. There are some final touches to be completed ie the solar panel and the QR code for the story and then a date will be set to unveil the contemporary pou. Expect an invite in March.
Social Enterprise for Young People
Due to COVID restrictions the Social Enterprise workshops had to be postponed, however new dates are being set to co-design a series of cool designs for a new product. Watch this space for when the new products are decided by our youth.
Community Hub
The Community Hub plans are now with Council for consent. https://www.whananakicommunity.co.nz/hub-design-plans
A funding application for the new build has been submitted to DIA and a further application is being developed for Lotteries Community Facilities. With contestable funding it is very difficult however this plan has been in progress for five years and every effort is being made to achieve this community goal. Thanks to our champions Dan Mawdsley and Tama Moore for all the background work.
We also appreciated the visit to the proposed site from DIA who are our partners in the CLD journey.
Community Activities
Recently the Experiencing Marine Reserves held a snorkelling day at the estuary and this was a fantastic day out for whānau. Thanks to Samara and the team from EMR.
The bombing comp from the footbridge organised by local youth was a great hit on a hot summers day. This activity attracted a lot of entrants. The CLD were happy to contribute by providing the prizes. Thank you to the awesome judges on the day.
If you have a great idea for a community activity and would like some support let the CLD know and they may be able to make a contribution.
If you would like to contribute to the newsletter or get involved in any of the initiatives, contact: Chala@whananakicommunity.co.nz
Since the writing of this newsletter...He Aitua! It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Jamie Hancox - our colleague, mentor and friend. Jamie was the leading project manager and mentor of the whananaki taiao group, his leadership, knowledge and passion for whananaki goes back to implementation of the original maara kai for the marae, to more recently with the planning, planting and development of the Native Nursery project patnership with CLD, DOC (Jobs for nature) and Whakapaumahara marae. Jamie was a dear friend to us all, and will be remembered for his huge heart, love of taiao and maara kai. Jamie will be sorely missed, we offer our deepest condolonces to Jamies partner Tania and his whānau at this difficult time.
